A solar water pump is either a pump with a permanent-magnet motor (we find this option exceptionally expensive once the controller is added) or a 3-phase, 220-volt/380-volt motor with a highly efficient sun-hours inverter, allowing the unit to operate during daylight hours and fill tanks for use at night. 

The first solar water pump described above generally operates only in sunlight and is completely static in darkness. 

Why We Recommend Battery + Inverter Over a Dedicated Solar Pump

Solar systems that produce power specifically for a solar water pump do not take into consideration the South African design imperative for lighting, an extra power socket, and a security fence or some form of protection.

The unfortunate truth of the South African situation is the exceptionally high crime rate and the demand to protect one’s property, driven by a general attitude of entitlement, resulting in significant potential losses from theft.

A battery system, while not specifically designed to drive the pump, is required in remote installations for these added security services.

We therefore recommend installing solar power, which stores energy in batteries and powers all devices via an inverter. This enables one to install an electric fence, a telemetry system, and/or a security alarm.

When using a solar-driven pump, consider operating it at the lowest flow rate to meet the required head, and potentially for 8 hours per day. The longer the pump runs at a low flow rate, the more economically viable the solar system will be for both purchase and maintenance.
